Why this eclipse is different

London won't see totality, which means there's no safe moment to look up unaided

In places along the path of totality, there's a brief window where the Sun is fully covered and safe to view directly. London isn't on that path. From first contact around 18:15 BST to the eclipse's end after 20:00, the Sun is never fully covered here, so certified eye protection is required for the whole event, not just part of it.

What you need to know

When is the eclipse in London?

Wednesday 12 August 2026. The partial eclipse begins around 18:15 BST, reaches its deepest point around 19:15, and ends shortly after 20:00, with the Sun still above the horizon throughout.

Will London see a total eclipse?

No. London will see a deep partial eclipse, around 91% of the Sun covered. The path of totality passes over Greenland, Iceland, and northern Spain, not the UK. This is still the most dramatic eclipse visible from London since 1999.

Are these glasses actually safe?

Yes. They're certified to the ISO 12312-2 standard and carry CE marking, blocking 100% of UV and infrared radiation and 99.999% of visible light, tested specifically for direct solar viewing.

Can I use normal sunglasses instead?

No. Even the darkest sunglasses do not block enough solar radiation to be safe. Looking at the sun without certified protection, at any point during a partial eclipse, can cause permanent eye damage.
