The most exciting astronomical event in 7 years is the total solar eclipse of April 8, 2024. During this total eclipse, it will get dark outside during the middle of the day. And during the few minutes of totality, it will be safe to look directly at the eclipsed sun. The entire sun will be blocked by the moon, and you will be able to see the corona. If you had the opportunity to see the 2017 eclipse, then you know that seeing a total eclipse is worth a special trip to the zone of totality. For a few minutes during totality, you can look directly at the sun with your naked eye. But before and after totality, or if you are in an area where the eclipse is not total, you will need eclipse glasses to safetly look at the sun. The path of the 2024 eclipse is shown at right. In the United States, the path of totality will include portions of the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. It will also cover portions of the Canadian provinces of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland.
